Catalina’s True North 34 Outboard Express Debuts at Miami International Boat Show
LARGO, FL (January 28, 2020) – One of the most versatile cruisers on the market today, True North Powerboats, recently acquired by Catalina Yachts, will exhibit the first True North 34 Outboard Express at the Miami International Boat Show from February 13 -17, 2020 at Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin, Virginia Key. The boat will be on display at Space 800.
The True North 34 Outboard Express will be equipped with a hydraulically operated “Porta-Bracket” that will allow the twin 300 h.p. outboards to be lifted vertically on the transom. This will provide draft adjustment for superior shallow water running, and allow the outboard lower units to be completely out of the water when not running, eliminating growth and corrosion. The yacht has a durable exterior with a voluminous aft cockpit and an “open concept” interior, which is as comfortable as it is functional.
“The True North line of Downeast-styled powerboats is a great addition to the Catalina family,” said Gerry Douglas, Catalina’s VP of Engineering. “The handling and performance of the True North boats is legendary, and the timeless classic styling appeals to sailors as well as experienced powerboaters. The ability to offer the True North models with either a single diesel or twin outboards will allow owners to create a True North uniquely suited to their boating needs,” he said. The MSRP for True North 34 Outboard Express is $349,000.
In addition to the True North 34 Outboard Express, Catalina is re-introducing others in the True North line: The True North 38 and the True North 34,which have direct water access and a “private beach” on the aft deck. Modular cockpit seating options are available for all models. “We’re are very excited about carrying on the True North legacy, and look forward to meeting future and past owners of the True North,” said Sharon Day, VP of Sales at Catalina.

The Go-Anywhere, Do-Everything Boat
The accommodations plan is designed for adventurous people who want to experience nature – comfortably. The main living spaces (including galley) are all on one level, and connect seamlessly to the spacious cockpit in the stern. Warm and dry when it’s rough, open and airy when it’s not – you’ll always have an intimate connection to your surroundings. Add in your adventure options, and there’s no weekend you can’t conquer.
Boats can bring people together better than any other activity. Eating and socializing with friends and family is more than half the fun. All current True North owners agree that one of the most popular features of the boat’s “open concept” interior is the “galley-up” configuration, and the Outboard Express is no different. Serious cooks love the large and well-equipped galley and everybody loves being up in the center of the action.
Design Makes the Difference
The Outboard Express performs exceptionally well on flat water in fair weather. But its unique ability to handle rough weather and stormy sea conditions is one of the many elements that sets this boat apart. The sharp, plumb bow slices through the waves instead of pounding on top of them when the seas build. The hull’s balanced displacement and flatter aft sections deliver a rock-solid ride in virtually all weather conditions. And since the hull design is inspired by boats that work all year long in all sorts of conditions, we can almost guarantee you won’t miss a day on the water (or be stranded in port) when the weather takes a turn for the worst.
Made in the USA
The True North 34 Outboard Express is built by highly experienced craftsmen in Largo, Florida, and is the brainchild of boat builders who have a distinguished record of helping to create some of the most successful powerboats and sailboats of the last 25 years. The combined boat-building experience of the True North team is measured in hundreds of years and you can see the quality that only that kind of experience can produce in every boat we build. And we take requests! Some of our adventure options were ideas that our owners brought to us. If you find a new toy or a new way to stow a piece of gear, we’ll engineer a solution that will make it easier to use.
Catalina Yachts Acquires True North Line of Downeast Powerboats
One of the most versatile cruisers on the market today, True North Powerboats was recently acquired by Catalina Yachts. True North Powerboats have the timeless, rugged Downeast aesthetic, with a hull design that handles the roughest conditions. With more than 30 years as one of the premier yacht builders in the United States, True North was a leader in resin infusion technology, a construction method that results in lighter, stronger hulls.
True North initiates Catalina’s entry into the growing market segment of Downeast-style powerboats and promises traditional style with great performance and Catalina value. The molds for the True North 34, True North 34 Outboard Express and True North 38 are being moved to the Catalina Yacht plant in Largo, Florida. Production will begin this year.
“We have been talking with dealers and owners while strategizing which configuration of boats to market first, and find the True North line is a brand that appeals to sailors, making it a good fit for Catalina Yachts,” said Sharon Day, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing. “This is yet another pivotal moment in Catalina’s 50 years of boat-building. Our entire management team is excited to provide more boating lifestyle choices to mariners attracted to the sea and Catalina craftmanship.”
The True North 34 is a single-engine express with a skeg-protected propeller, the approach lobstermen have relied on for decades for efficiency and avoiding pot lines. An optional bow thruster provides additional maneuverability. The award-winning True North 34 Outboard Express combines timeless Downeast good looks, outstanding all-weather performance, and a spacious interior with the efficiency, speed, and shallow draft that the twin 250 hp. outboard engines provide.
The True North 38 is an elegant Downeast cruiser with space, speed, stability and classic good looks. With several configuration options, this boat is up for anything, whether it’s a day trip or extended adventure. Catalina Yachts plans to introduce an outboard version to this model.
